Palaeoflux Model

The Palaeoflux Model is an empirical model developed to calculate past solid sediment volume and flux of rivers, associated with well-defined (palaeo-) drainage basins. Key model variables are (palaeo-) drainage basin area and long-term denudation rate. The denudation rate, in turn, is also dependent on a set of variables that are defined per timeslice for the S2SMoz study. 

A set of logarithmic codes was developed to model denudation rate. The codes and an extensive methodology are part of the deliverables and all results are reproduceable.  

Modelling results are presented in the S2SMoz report as the 4th deliverable: 40 Volume and Flux Tables, 1 table per timeslice, in which all calculations can be reproduced and variables tested. 

The model has been tested using seismics and basins with known sediment volumes. 

For the S2SMoz study, we modelled the volume and progradation phases of the Cretaceous Limpopo megadelta, and other now hidden deltaic systems. 

  • Once the Limpopo shed three times more sediment to the ocean than the Niger today.  
  • Several smaller Mozambican rivers produced high volumes of sediment when uplift caused greater gradients. 

We want to know how much sediment is transported to offshore basins, at which rates, and through which river mouths. Furthermore, we want to know how this happened in the past.
