- 39 timeslices, from Jurassic rift initiation to Holocene. 29 reconstructed rivers.
- Finalized project, peer-reviewed, ready to dispatch.
Knowledge of reservoir model boundary conditions, including sandstone composition and texture, is indispensable for simulation of sandstone diagenetic evolution. The volumetric and petrographic results from this study can be integrated into petroleum system and reservoir characterization models and the qualitative results (e.g. the well-defined palaeodrainage evolution) can be implemented into Earth system models. The study results include the palaeodrainage evolution of the Zambezi, Limpopo and Rovuma rivers and several smaller streams (Messalo, Lurio, Buzi, Save); an alternation through time of sediment compositions ranging from volcanic litharenite to arkose and quartzarenite, determined by climate and tectonics, from sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous sources; and sediment supply parameters revealing important peaks of sediment flux that are associated with episodes of deltaic progradation.
Quantitative results for all timeslices include solid sediment flux and volumes from well-defined river systems, sandstone texture and mineral composition, and initial porosities. The resulting data can be inserted as boundary conditions into clastic reservoir models, to predict diagenetic evolution towards final porosity. Qualitative results include palaeodrainage reconstruction for all rivers that supply sediment to the Mozambique Margins, assessment of fluctuations in delivered sediment volume per drainage system, indicating episodes of increasing flux associated with past deltaic deposition, and the evolution of sandstone composition as varying provenance areas and climate regimes control the source to sink system through time.
